The eight extended essays are experiments in writing unconventionally about electronic music in the context of other arts and disciplines. The essays are each structured in a way that reflects the subject, and use visual, fictional and other literary devices and references. In short, this book isn't only about electronic music, but offers ways to consider sound and music, and listening. There's an accompanying CD of excerpts from composers and artists such as Autechre, Merzbow, Ficarra, Dhomont, Harvey, Westerkamp and Ceccarelli, to name but a few.

It's also rather expensive to buy, which is out of my control. You can read a slightly different version here.

All extracts are copyright © Katharine Norman, 2004 and serve purely as a way of encouraging you to buy the book (of course). I cannot, for copyright reasons, provide the sound examples here - if you buy the book there is an accompanying CD.

If you already have the book, you might find the links page useful.

ElectroCD have a great page about it with links to the composers mentioned. Visit here to buy the works by the many generous musicians who agreed to let me talk about them! ElectroCD have at times sold the book, and may be doing so now.

A shortened version of the chapter on Dhomont (a rather strange interview about translation and schizophrenia....) has, rather appropriately, been translated into French and is available here.
